Junior: Dream State
"I'm pregnant."
Her eyes went impossibly wide as soon as she said it, and her hands moved to cover her mouth. "I'm sorry."
"Wha... how long have you known?"
"Six weeks. I... I didn't want to tell you. Not until after the baby was born."
The last thing Tony remembered was his heart racing and what felt like his throat closing up as his head hit the pillow.
"Tony? Tony!" He heard Abby's voice calling his name, the sound getting further away as he faded out.
-----
When his eyes opened again, the first thing he saw was the top of Abby's head bowed in prayer as her fingers moved slowly over the beads on her rosary.
He made a feeble attempt at speaking only to realize that he wasn't going to get very far as long as his throat was as dry as the Sahara Desert. Reaching up, he touched her shoulder gently to get her attention and she jerked her head up in surprise.
"God... Tony!" She cried, jumping out of her chair with tears in her eyes.
He immediately noticed the long, pale pink dress with black accents that she was wearing as she headed toward the door to call the doctor, and when she turned back to him his eyes widened at the sight of the large bump that was covered by the soft fabric. He was admittedly worried about how long he had been out for, and just as he was about to ask her, his doctor came in to examine him.
It didn't take very long, and after assuring him that he was fine, they left him alone with Abby.
"Baby--"
"Shh... don't talk. Rest now, you've been out for awhile."
He offered her a worried frown before looking around the room. "Wh... where is she?"
"Who?"
"Our little girl. She... was right here when I--"
Abby interrupted him, her green eyes looking into his hazel ones. "We don't have a baby girl, just this little guy," she said, resting her hand on her swollen belly. "Due in three weeks."
"Wh... what? I don't--"
She placed a hand over his, a worried smile on her lips. "It's okay. I'm pretty sure Gibbs will wait 'til you're all healed before kicking your ass. That concussion must've been worse than the doctors thought."
"How long have I been out?"
"Eight hours. You're lucky Abs is good at keepin' herself calm or I'd have your ass for worryin' her."
Tony looked between Abby and Gibbs confusedly. "Wh... what happened? You were only a couple months along before I..." he stopped, fisting his hands in his hair and fighting the urge he had to scream.
"You don't remember anything?"
"You and Ziva went to pick up our suspect," Gibbs explained, gauging his reaction. "Bust went bad, you jumped in front of her and got yourself shot in the hip. They got the bullet out, but you're gonna need a couple months of physical therapy."
"I don't... I don't remember that. God, Abby... I'm so sorry."
"It's alright, Tony," Gibbs said, dropping a hand to his shoulder. "Get some rest, huh? I'll hold Ziva and McGee off 'til mornin'."
"Thank you," Abby said quietly, offering him a slight smile as she reached for Tony's hand, squeezing it gently.
After Gibbs left the room Tony looked up at her with a small frown. "That's what really happened?"
She nodded, leaning over and kissing him gently. "I was so scared," she whispered. "You know what got me through it?"
He simply looked up at her, a frown still on his face.
"You. Knowing that you wouldn't leave me or our baby. Not without a fight."
He tugged on her hand, coaxing her over to sit with him before kissing her deeply and resting a hand on her very pregnant belly. "I love you. So much."
"I know. I love you too," she smiled, relaxing carefully against his chest.
They sat in silence for a while longer, just enjoying each others company when Tony finally broke the silence. "You know... I just had the weirdest dream while I was out."
